Choosing an automatic fleece roller filter is not only about tank gallons. The right choice depends on where the filter sits, how much water flows through the chamber, how much fleece width the system needs, and whether the tank is an all-in-one aquarium or a sump with filter sock openings.

Nature Dimensions offers two main N-Clear paths: N-Clear Nano for compact AIO systems and N-Clear M for larger AIO and sump installations.

Start with your filtration layout

If your aquarium is an all-in-one tank with rear filtration chambers, chamber footprint is usually the first constraint. Many nano AIO systems do not have room for a large fleece roller, so the filter needs to be compact and supported by the correct adapter.

If your aquarium uses a sump, the key question is often whether the system has standard 4 inch filter sock openings or a larger rectangular filter chamber. That points you toward N-Clear M and, in some layouts, an N-Fit M adapter or filter sock cover.

N-Clear M: higher flow for larger systems

N-Clear M is built for many 30-120 gallon systems, larger AIO tanks, and 4 inch filter sock sumps. It uses 61 mm / 2.4 inch wide fleece and supports up to 800 GPH in a single setup.

Multi-filter N-Clear M setups can scale further for tanks with multiple filtration chambers. N-Clear M Dual uses two filters together, while larger multi-filter layouts can support higher flow paths when the tank layout calls for it.

Do not choose by flow rate alone

Flow rate matters, but it is not the only spec. A filter that handles the flow still needs to physically fit, sit at the right water height, route the fleece correctly, and leave enough space for maintenance. Adapter compatibility, chamber opening, and controller placement all matter.

Popular fleece roller models such as Red Sea NanoMat and Red Sea ReefMat are often compared by fleece width and supported flow. That comparison is useful, but the best filter for a specific aquarium is the one that fits cleanly and can be maintained easily.

Simple rule of thumb

Choose N-Clear Nano for compact AIO tanks where a small footprint is critical. Choose N-Clear M for larger AIO tanks, sump systems, and higher-flow mechanical filtration. If your tank has an unusual chamber, start with the adapter path before assuming the filter cannot fit.
