Before testing: make the setup safe
- Keep the controller, power adapter, and cable connectors dry.
- Make a drip loop in every cable before it reaches the controller.

- Never force a keyed connector or move the mechanism with fingers near a powered motor.
- If the controller is wet, smells burned, becomes hot, flickers, restarts, or shuts off when the motor is connected, stop and contact support.

If Manual works: check the automatic trigger
1. Confirm controller mode
N-Clear Nano and N-Clear M support sensor-based modes plus an experimental timer mode. In Default Mode, the motor advances after the optical sensor remains submerged for about 30 seconds. Long Delay Mode waits roughly 11 minutes. Timer Mode advances on a fixed 12-hour schedule without using the sensor as the trigger.
A short splash is not enough in Default Mode, and an 11-minute delay can look like failure if Long Delay was enabled accidentally.
2. Reseat and inspect the sensor connection
Power off, unplug and reconnect the sensor firmly, then power on. Keep the connector dry. Make sure the cable is not pinched, pulled, or routed where a lid or cabinet can damage it.
3. Test sensor submersion
With Manual already proven, place the optical sensor in water and keep it submerged longer than the active mode delay. The motor should advance for up to about seven seconds, then stop when the sensor returns to air. If the sensor is already permanently underwater during normal clean-fleece operation, solve the waterline/height problem rather than using repeated submersion as the normal setup.
4. Check whether dirty fleece actually raises water to the sensor
If fleece becomes dark but the internal water level never reaches the sensor, lower the sensor only in small steps. Also confirm incoming water passes through the fleece. Bypass around the adapter, an open sock hole, or the wrong water blocker can prevent the internal level from rising even while other parts of the sump look normal.
If Manual does not work: isolate load and connection
- Disconnect power.
- Disengage or remove the motor from the take-up shaft so it has no mechanical load.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the motor cable. Align the keyed internal bump; never twist or force the connector.
- Unplug the sensor so only the power adapter, controller, and motor remain in the test.
- Restore power and press Manual while the motor is unloaded.
If the unloaded motor turns, power off again and reinstall it, making sure the D-shaped coupling is fully aligned and locked into the take-up shaft. If it still does not turn, note the controller lights and contact support with a short white-light video of the test.
Inspect the complete fleece path for resistance
With power disconnected, remove the inner frame if the User Guide calls for it and inspect:
- sand, shell fragments, small rocks, or a snail near the bottom roller path;
- fleece folded under itself or threaded outside a guide;
- a take-up end that is loose, slipping, or attached unevenly;
- wet fleece that dried and hardened while the filter was off;
- a roll rubbing the frame because it is off-center;
- an incorrect third-party roll that is too wide, thick, stiff, or long.
Do not pull the motor cable to free a jam. Remove the obstruction, rethread with light even tension, and perform another Manual test before returning to automatic operation.
Main + Extension troubleshooting
On a linked system, press Manual and watch every motor. If both move, a modest difference in used-roll diameter is normal. If only one moves:
- Power off.
- Reseat both motor connections at the splitter.
- Swap the two splitter outputs only as a controlled isolation test.
- Test the non-moving motor unloaded.
- Record whether the problem follows the motor/cable or remains on one splitter output.
The splitter cable only divides the motor output. It is not a sensor input, feedback interface, or Apex control cable. Keep the N-Clear controller wired normally.
Stop and contact support when...
- the controller or any connector became wet;
- lights flicker, dim, restart, or go out when the motor is connected;
- the motor or cable becomes hot, smells unusual, or shows visible damage;
- the unloaded motor still does not move after the keyed connector is reseated;
- the motor runs continuously or does not stop after the sensor leaves the water;
- a jam returns after correct rethreading and the path is visibly clear.
Do not keep cycling power through a suspected short. Leave the unit disconnected until the correct replacement part is identified.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Manual work but automatic mode does not?
The motor path can work while the sensor is disconnected, too high, not submerged long enough for the selected mode, or placed where dirty fleece does not raise the internal level. Check mode, connection, trigger delay, and water path.
Why does the motor make noise without rolling fleece?
The D-shaped motor coupling may not be fully engaged with the take-up shaft, the take-up end may be slipping, or the fleece path may be jammed.
Should I replace the controller first?
No. The symptom should isolate the part. A no-load Manual test separates mechanical drag and shaft engagement from motor/controller/cable faults. Controller flicker under motor load needs support review rather than guessing.
Can I test the motor with another voltage?
No. N-Clear is a 12 V system. Do not connect a 24 V or 36 V supply, tap the motor wiring, or use a low-current 0–10 V control output.
