How to Measure an AIO Filter Chamber for a Fleece Roller or Adapter

Quick answer: Measure more than the top opening. A safe fleece-roller fit depends on the opening's inside width and length, support ledges or brackets, chamber depth, baffle and weir heights, underwater obstructions, normal waterline, incoming-water path, and clear space above the chamber. For a new N-Fit design, use the complete L1–L7 reference and white-light photo checklist rather than sending only the aquarium's gallon size.

Why tank volume does not confirm fit

Two 20-gallon AIO aquariums can have completely different rear chambers. One may use a removable square sock cup on two support blocks. Another may have a narrow media basket, a fixed lower brace, a stationary hood, or a weir that leaves too little vertical access. The display volume says almost nothing about those details.

A good fit review answers three separate questions:

  1. Can the filter pass through and sit securely?
  2. Can water be directed through the fleece without an uncontrolled bypass?
  3. Can the owner load, remove, and service the filter after the tank is installed?

Before measuring, check the verified compatibility tables

Also confirm whether the tank still has its factory sock cup, tray, support blocks, or cradle. A product may be a direct fit in the original tank but become a custom-support case after those parts are removed.

The L1–L7 adapter measurements

Use millimeters when possible. Hold the ruler square to the surface, take each measurement more than once, and photograph the ruler in position so engineering can see what the number represents.

Do not send only L1 and L2 for a custom build. Those two numbers are useful for an early screen, but they do not show where the adapter can rest, how water enters, or whether a hanging leg will collide with a baffle.

Measure the space below the opening

The top opening can be large while the lower chamber narrows around braces, molded shelves, pipes, or dividers. This is why a custom top plate cannot make every tank compatible.

  • Measure inside width and depth at the narrowest point, not only at the rim.
  • Measure usable vertical depth from the support surface to the chamber floor or first obstruction.
  • Note any lower cross-brace, vertical rail, molded shelf, drain pipe, heater, or media-basket guide.
  • Show whether the obstruction can be removed without modifying the aquarium.
  • Record the normal operating water depth and where the water enters the chamber.

For reference, N-Clear Nano has a 2.56 × 2.56 inch footprint and is 12.2 inches tall excluding the roll. N-Clear M has a 3.55 × 2.9 inch body footprint and is 15.75 inches tall; nonstandard M chambers generally need at least 4.3 × 4.3 × 7 inches of usable support/chamber space or a reviewed adapter geometry.

Measure overhead service clearance

A roller must be installed and maintained, not only squeezed through the opening once. Photograph and measure:

  • tank rim, lid, canopy, light arms, and mesh-top frame;
  • distance to the wall or cabinet back;
  • drain pipes, unions, gate valves, cables, and dosing lines above the chamber;
  • room to lift the filter body and load a full new roll;
  • the final path the motor and controller cables will take.

For M, keep at least roughly 4 × 3.5 × 9.8 inches above the sock plate free of obstructions around the filter's upper access area. More space makes roll changes easier.

Photograph the chamber so measurements are understandable

Turn off the blue reef lighting and use white light. When safe, stop flow briefly so the internal geometry is visible. Submit:

  1. a straight top-down photo of the full chamber;
  2. a front or display-side view showing the weir and first mechanical chamber;
  3. a side view showing rim, baffles, supports, and usable vertical space;
  4. a photo of the removed factory sock cup, tray, or media basket beside a ruler;
  5. close-ups with the ruler placed at each L1–L7 reference;
  6. a wide photo showing plumbing, lid, wall, cabinet, and access above the chamber.

Do not crop so tightly that the measurement loses context. A clear 100 mm measurement is not useful if the reviewer cannot tell whether it is the opening, outside frame, chamber wall, or removable holder.

Show the water path and support points

Mark or describe where display water enters, which chamber is first, where it flows next, and where the return pump sits. Photograph any bumps, rails, tabs, clips, or bonded blocks that supported the original media holder. These small features often decide between:

  • a simple flat drop-in adapter;
  • a model-specific stepped adapter;
  • a hang-on adapter such as S8080H;
  • a cone-style M fit into a standard sock holder;
  • or no safe fit with the current filter body.

Is the top opening measurement enough?

No. It does not show the lower chamber, support height, baffles, water path, or overhead service access.

Should I measure in inches or millimeters?

Millimeters are preferred for adapter design. If you use inches, include clear fractional or decimal values and a photo of the ruler placement.

Can Nature Dimensions make an adapter from my tank model name?

Only if that exact model already has a verified design. Unlisted and modified tanks need the complete measurements and photos.

What if the original sock holder was removed?

Say so and photograph the current chamber plus any removed parts you still have. The original direct-fit result may no longer apply, but a hang-on or replacement-support design may be possible.

Does an unlisted tank mean it will not fit?

No. It means the fit is not yet verified. The measurements decide whether an existing adapter, a new adapter, another N-Clear size, or no current solution is the honest answer.
